The Truth About Sweat

What sweat actually is, and why it doesn’t have to smell.

Sweat is a big deal – especially for active people. It’s why products that genuinely work matter, and why getting to know the science changes the game.

Whether you’re running after the kids, navigating a busy schedule or moving from gym to office to social without a second to reset – these are the ingredients that do the heavy lifting when it comes to managing sweat.

Plus, the lowdown on what sweat actually is – because no, it doesn’t have to smell.

Why fresh sweat isn’t gross.

In short, it’s mostly water. And it’s not the sweat itself that smells, this is down to bacteria breaking down protein molecules within it after you’ve perspired.

So if you’re someone who notices your deodorant suddenly stops working half way through the day-  it was probably never working on the problem. Products that make skin sterile? They disrupt the microbiome. Fragrance? It just masks odour.

The science behind the sweat.

Eccrine and apocrine glands - an alliance in the fight against your body overheating. Because as annoying as sweat can be, its job is important when it comes to keeping you cool.

But not all sweat glands are created equal. Each person has 2-4million eccrine glands covering almost the entire bodily surface area. Sweat from these glands is a fresh mix of mostly water, with some salt and other eccrine gland chemicals. Think of them as the crowd at a sold-out stadium- densely populated and responsive to whatever action is going on.

Then there’s apocrine glands. They’re larger, present only in specific areas of the body and produce a different kind of sweat. Showing up in places like your armpits, scalp and intimate areas, their work begins during puberty and produces sweat rich in fats, proteins, sugars and ammonia. Think of them as the VIPs in the stadium- in the invite-only lounges and needing more support.

And it’s that support that requires ingredients that actually work.

The Hero Ingredients

The ones we’ve researched, tested (tested again) and backed in the fight against sweat.

The Water Blocker

In the background doing the hard work – aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly, the hero of Petrichor antiperspirant. It temporarily blocks eccrine sweat ducts, meaning less sweat for bacteria to break down.

The Bacteria Targeters

You’ll find triethyl citrate and ethylhexylglycerin in Petichor body spray and antiperspirant– a powerful duo in the fight against bacteria. They work together to create an environment where bacteria can’t thrive, meaning there are less of them to turn sweat into a smell. The body wash hero? salicylic acid. An ingredient that targets bacteria, not just masking odour. It breaks down dead skin cells that bacteria feed on – especially in armpits and other apocrine-heavy spots.

The Healthy Skin Creators

Healthy skin has a better microbiome, so helping the healthy bacteria thrive and keeping the problematic ones in check is key. That’s why we use rhamnose, glucose and glucuronic acid across the entire Petrichor range; and niacinamide, panthenol urea and pineapple fruit extract in our body wash. A collective of ingredients that keep skin supported and odour at bay.

Science-backed Sweat Care.

Petrichor’s three products are formulated to work – at every stage of the sweat-to-odour process. To do the hard work and truly target the extra sweat that comes with an active lifestyle, not just mask it.

Sweat is a big deal. And though it’s been labelled annoying, inconvenient, gross even – for us it’s just part of an active life. And it deserves products built around it.
